After years of developing a suitable brand and packaging of communicate the history of his vineyards to consumer abroad, Luis Chiaramonte with the help of his Fairtrade partner and exporter Mendoza Vineyards SA has broad together history with quality.
The Chiaramonte family has been producing grapes on the farm Miguelisa for the past 107 years, with the original owner, the grandfather, vinifying on the farm and selling to the local community at farm gate. It was originally just a way of life and a little household income.
The wine produce from the 1907 Malbec vineyards from Miguelisa has not received it well deserved recognition from consumers abroad. Back in 1901 the farm was originally owned by a German immigrant(name unknown), who was the medical doctor for the community of Medrano on the outskirts of Mendoza city.
After planting the first Malbec vines during 1901 he sold the farm to the Chiaramonte family prior to harvesting his maiden harvest, therefore since 1905, when the vines came into production, the Chiaramonte family harvested and produced all the wine in a small winery on the farm. From there the family sold their produce in the local market.
Today a 110 years later, the original rootstock from the originally planted vines are still in production and delivery the award winning results you’ll in a bottle of 1907 Fairhills Fairtrade Malbec.
“With the good conditions of the past 12 months we are very happy with our harvest and the quality of grapes we produced during 2011. Due to the increase in quality we have managed to obtain a very good price for our harvest, which not only benefits us as producers but also our employees. Harvesters earned more due to the increase in volume plus our permanent employees earn a share in the profits of the harvest.”
“Therefore it was a very successful year for all producer and employee alike, and it has placed us in a position to improve various aspects with regards to our vineyards and infrastructure”, says Luis Chiaramonte.
“The quality of grapes produced from our vineyards can be described in its fullest when opening and enjoying a bottle of 1907 Malbec. I’ve been working on this famr for the past 3 years with my brother, Nelson, and I can speak for both of us saying that it is big improvement to our lives working and living here on Miguelisa. With Fairtrade we are receiving life changing benefits and with the assistance of the agriculture engineer we are learning every day about improving the quality of our production ”, adds Lorenzo Olivera.
